Did You Check Your Content Marketing Strategy?

As marketers, when we find something that works, we are quick to let it be. But society and its needs are ever-changing. So, periodically, it would make sense to revisit your content strategy to see where there is room for improvement and what needs to adjust to maximize the effectiveness of a content marketing plan.

What is a Content Marketing Strategy?

A content marketing strategy is a marketing strategy that prepares a business to attract, engage and retain its target consumer by sharing digital media to create brand awareness, lead generation, and expertise. Also, content strategies create trust and loyalty with the target audience by sharing videos, images, and initiatives through digital platforms, including social media.

It is safe to say that content strategy is a critical part of business development and retention, and these initiatives are often built on blogs, social media, email marketing campaigns, videos, and newsletters.

Start with a Template

If you have never created a content marketing plan, the best option is to start with a template. Fortunately, a few online templates are free for all users to download, often if they make an account. So, templates are a good option for starters to have some guidance on where to start. This template provided by Semrush is a downloadable PDF document that one can save for their records and edit to fit their content marketing needs.

Templates are usually short and made step-by-step to help marketers analyze what they can already do with their current resources. The great thing about these is that it starts from the big picture. Content marketing generally follows the concept of narrowing the funnel. What is the goal? Do you want to increase consumer engagement with posts? And what would a realistic success metric be? 5%, 15%, or 50%?

As the marketer follows the steps, the template will narrow the funnel to more precise information, like, who is your audience? Should your products be tailored to different people? Do you need to create a new marketing persona?

From there, you will see how your current strategies work by performing audits and purging the content that no longer benefits your SEO. Think of old blog articles where the information needs to be updated. The last thing a business needs is outdated information on its website. It could potentially hurt its ranking as Google recently began approaching websites with a “people first” mindset. If the information is not relevant, it will not rank well. It is a simple process of keep, adjust, or remove.

The template goes further to analyze the new strategy. For example, do you need new SEO keywords? What are your competitors using, and is that working for them?

Using Platforms that Already Exist

Multiple mediums can be used to communicate effectively with your audience and create awareness for new customers. These platforms are:

  • Social Media Platforms (Instagram posts, stories and reels, Facebook, Pinterest, and Linkedin, as a few examples)
  • Create blog articles on your website to increase traffic organically through SEO Keywords and content relevancy
  • Video content uploaded to Youtube on how to use a product or how a service has benefited a customer (testimonials)

There are many benefits to engaging your audience through content. A perfect example is the Duolingo owl account on Tiktok. The released content is loosely based on the language learning courses that Duolingo offers, but rather it is “unhinged” material, as described by Insider, that made it a pop cultural meme.

Content Marketing Strategies are a MUST

Content Marketing Strategies are pivotal in creating paths to connect with current and potential buyers. But, most importantly, marketers should always assume that something can change and that these strategies should be revisited periodically to confirm that they are effective and restructure them if needed.
