Social media marketing is creative, fun, and a direct way to communicate with your audience. But, just as there is a level of creativity when making posts and reels, there is also a strategic element that must be considered when creating content for social media platforms.
Creating captions that convert can be challenging, and even the most artsy creator can find themselves at a loss when knowing how to write their captions and choose the hashtags that will have the best chance of reaching their desired target audience.
But how can you make these work for you? Your best bet is to learn analytical reports and learn SEO.
Learn Search Engine Optimization
With the knowledge of SEO, marketers can see how their posts impact their online presence. SEO, better known as Search Engine Optimization, is the study and strategy used to collect a group of keywords (or hashtags if on social media) that are relevant to your product or service and target audience. These keywords assist in improving the online positioning of your website and social media content so that it is at the forefront of your target audiences’ internet searches and For You pages.
Here is an example: think of someone looking for a post about dishes made with an air fryer, and your product is a new air fryer that is launching, priced for average families. As the parent company, you can consider creating captions that include SEO keywords (plus hashtags at the end) to launch your post in front of the right buyers.
As an example, you might think of using a caption like this if you are trying to use an air fryer with keywords Kitchen, small appliance, air fryer, X Brand, cooking routine:
Searching for the latest technology to add to your kitchen? Look no further and see how X Brand’s Air Fryer Model X is the right fit for your family’s next meal. From reducing fat to containing a kitchen mess, this addition to your cooking routine will make cooking a breeze.
#airfryer #kitchtech #small appliances
As you can see, the caption talks about the appliance, company, model, and purpose it serves in your kitchen. Moz has a great free tool that lets you research keywords that can work for your marketing strategy.
Use Analytics to Work for You
Analytics are tools that are provided for free through social media platforms and Google (if you are tracking traffic on your website). Tools like these will show impressions, likes, comments, and in some cases, how long viewers watch your content (think Tik Tok videos).
Understanding these analytics will show if something flops and if it is successful, and it will be a tracker of information for your future posts. A lot of social media presence takes trial and error until you find the time that works best for your brand and product, so do not be discouraged, but use what works to assist you with future posts.
By the way, you should be using Google Analytics for your website. You can set up your account here. It’s free.
How To Enter Hashtags
Entering hashtags is relatively simple. They allow up to 2000 characters (depending on the social media platform) worth of words separated by hashtags as they are entered by the user. These tags are how viewers search for what they want to watch and make content more accessible to appear on their homepage. Keep in mind that it becomes easier once the content is viewed and the algorithm pushes it up in search.
Marketers across the board have agreed that hashtags should always be used as they serve as free marketing for your channel. Hashtags should be relevant to your content, not overused, and helps the social media platform know where to put your content. Check out this blog post from Influencer Marketing Hub to learn more.
How To Know Which Hashtags To Use
There are a couple of things that you can do to determine what works best for your channel. But this requires a lot of research. Firstly, look at the competition, as their content likely have working hashtags. It is acceptable to adopt hashtags that are working.
Users can also search by posting a # in the search bar to see trends. This is an excellent inspiration to create different content; however, remember what the channel is about and ensure it meets the category it should represent. For example, creating content about bikinis has no place in a medium dedicated to home improvement. Therefore, one and the other are nowhere near relevant, and your users will think that, too.
Companies, influencers, and marketers alike sometimes work with a brand. For example, social media platforms allow companies to create what they call a Branded Hashtag (it would be #DianaAlexiaCreations if I had a youtube channel) to enable viewers to search not just by account but also by the name of the company on the search bar. Branded hashtags create an additional pathway to your channel, letting them see other posted videos they can watch. Viewers usually click the subscribe button when they like what they see.
Social Media platforms create a snowball effect when a channel starts to take off. Especially if the content is somehow tied to something that happened in the past, the viewer may go back to essentially “catch up” on what happened.
